Chances are, even if you’ve been paying the slightest bit of attention to the last 10 years of commercial real estate, you may have noticed a rather prominent casualty: the strip mall. Like their brethren with dozens of tenants and parking spaces galore, strip malls have been hit hard in the retail transition to an online-first economy. But unlike a mall with big names and greater resources, strip malls often have just a few tenants which support the local community where they reside.
We are excited by the development of cities across the area looking to do something about this trend. Mixed use development has long been a solution to making use of existing buildings while also creating a more welcoming environment for both commercial and residential tenants alike. Strip malls are ground zero for this innovative approach and we look forward to seeing more revitalization efforts underway as cities continue to reassess their zoning laws. Citrus Valley Association of REALTORS® has been working hard with cities locally to expand mixed used development.
